Did nurses usually kiss their patients full on the lips? Miller didn’t think so and, in an effort to escape the nurse’s amorous assault, he tried to bury his head in his pillow. There must be some protocol for dealing with this type of thing. Now she was laughing at him.

‘Come on, Ben!’ a voice he knew he should recognise said through rolling giggles. ‘Oh my God, you should see yourself! You’ve gone all red. I just couldn’t resist — you looked so angelic lying there. Come on — open your eyes!’

Mandy was smiling broadly when Miller forced his eyes open. What was happening? He looked round. He was still in hospital, but not for much longer. With an almighty effort, and ignoring his dizziness, he sat upright.

‘Get me my clothes,’ he said. ‘I’m getting out of here.’

‘Hello, Mandy!’ Mandy said. ‘How are you, Mandy? Everything okay, Mandy? Considering you were in a car crash, Mandy. No bones broken or anything, Mandy?’

Miller looked her up and down. She appeared to be in one piece — no bandages or anything. A few bruises on her face and neck, but otherwise looking no more than slightly shop-soiled. ‘How are you?’ he said, injecting as much empathy as he could muster into his tone.

‘A bit groggy,’ she said. ‘But otherwise fine. Thanks for asking.’

He couldn’t tell if she was being sarcastic or not, but, for him, that was nothing new.

‘Aaron is in a pretty bad state,’ she continued.

‘Yeah, I know. I looked in on him last night.’ She pouted. ‘Don’t worry — I checked in on you too and you were sleeping like a baby.’

‘Any idea what happened?’

‘No, but I’m going to find out.’ Folan’s face materialised in his mind’s eye. ‘Folan was in — he wants me to get back on Ritchie’s case today.’

‘But you’re in no fit state for anything like that.’

‘I’m fine — a head made of steel, me. Anyway, I’ve got to act while the trail’s still hot.’

‘You don’t look fine. And by the way, remember there’s no “I” in team.’

‘Oh — that.’

‘Yes — that.’

After a moment’s thought that was almost physically painful, he said, ‘All right, make yourself useful and get my clothes for me.’

Mandy was already dressed.
